Salsa, bachata & more in Lisbon

Lisbon is the global cultural capital of kizomba — the dance is from Angola, but the city has been its main international hub since the 1990s when the Lusophone-African diaspora settled here and started teaching openly. That heritage runs through every social: the music skews more semba and tarraxinha than what you'll hear in London or Madrid, the connection is taken seriously, and the floorcraft is unforgiving in the best way. Salsa and bachata are also alive and well — Cuban salsa especially, with a noticeable timba lean — and the bigger Latin schools (Jazzy Dance Studios, UDance) cover all three styles across multiple weekly classes. Most studios cluster around the Santos / Cais do Sodré waterfront, with weekend socials extending into Bairro Alto, Cascais and the wider riverfront. The international festival calendar peaks in early summer (Kizombada in June) and again in late spring (Open Summer Festival down in the Algarve in May).

Where to start: book a beginner kizomba class at one of the Santos-area studios; the same school will usually run a Sunday DanSunday-style class + social so you can try both styles back to back.

Do I need to speak Portuguese? No. Most teachers and dancers speak English fluently — Lisbon has a huge international expat scene and dancing is the common language.

When are the best nights? Sunday is the kizomba anchor (Jazzy Santos DanSunday and Dance Factory's Sunday class are both established). Friday and Saturday are when the bigger Latin socials run. Weeknights have steady class options at every level.

What about the Algarve? The Algarve is festival territory rather than year-round scene — events like Open Summer Festival in May draw international dancers, but week-to-week dancing happens in Lisbon and Porto.
