Cookie Policy

Last updated June 2026.

Active Scene is a free directory of social-dance events. We keep cookies to the bare minimum needed to run the site, remember the choices you make, and count anonymous page views so we know which parts of the country need more listings. This page lists every cookie we set, what it does, and how long it sticks around. For the wider picture of what we collect and why, see our privacy notice.

What cookies are

A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. The next time you visit, your browser sends it back, which lets the site recognise the same browser — for example to remember that you asked for events "near me", or to tell a returning visitor apart from a brand-new one for counting purposes. Cookies can't run programs or read other files on your device; they only hold the small bit of text the site put there.

What cookies Active Scene uses

All of our cookies are first-party(set by Active Scene itself, not by an outside company). The Supabase sign-in cookies only ever appear if you log in — either to a dancer account (/account), to the organiser portal (/portal), or to the admin area.

Cookie namePurposeTypeDurationLegal basis
as_cookie_consentRemembers whether you accepted or declined analytics on the cookie banner, so we don't keep asking.Strictly necessary1 yearLegal obligation (recording your cookie choice)
as_didA random, anonymous device identifier that lets us tell repeat visitors apart for analytics. Not linked to your name, account, or email.Analytics1 yearConsent (via the cookie banner)
as_locSaves your "near me" location preference (approximate coordinates and country) so you don't have to set it again next visit.Functional30 daysYour choice (functional preference)
as_countryRemembers a saved country filter so listings default to the country you last browsed.FunctionalUp to 1 yearYour choice (functional preference)
as_geoRemembers the country you switched to, so the right country home page loads on your next visit.Functional1 yearYour choice (functional preference)
sb-* (Supabase)Keeps you signed in to a dancer account, the organiser portal or the admin area. Only set if you log in. Names start with sb-.Strictly necessarySession — up to ~7 daysContract (providing the account you signed in to)

A note on our analytics "session" id: it's held in your browser's session storage (as_sid / as_sid_ts), not in a cookie, and it's cleared when you close the tab. We mention it here for completeness — it isn't a cookie and isn't sent on every request the way a cookie is.

What we do NOT use

To be completely clear about what is not here:

  • No third-party advertising cookies. We do not run ad networks or behavioural-advertising trackers of any kind.
  • No Meta / Facebook Pixel and no other social-media tracking pixels.
  • No Google Analytics, Google Ads, or other third-party analytics tags. Our analytics are first-party and anonymous.
  • Nothing is sold or shared. We do not sell, rent, or share cookie data with anyone for marketing.

How to manage cookies

When you first visit, our cookie banner lets you "Decline analytics". If you decline, we skip the analytics beacon and don't use the as_did device cookie for counting. The strictly necessary and functional cookies above still work so the site keeps functioning and remembers your preferences.

You can also manage cookies in your browser at any time — most let you block or delete cookies for a specific site, or clear them all. Look for the privacy or cookie settings in your browser's preferences. Active Scene keeps working if you delete our cookies; you may just need to set your location preference again, and the banner will reappear.

Changes to this policy

We'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page whenever this policy changes. If we make a material change to how we use cookies, the cookie banner will re-appear on your next visit so you can review and re-confirm your choice.
